Today they move onto the main field at Dowerglen High School in Edenvale for Phase B: Obedience and Phase C: Protection. This is the part of IGP most people picture when they think of working dogs, and it’s free to come and watch.

Missed yesterday? Read what tracking is all about.

Phase B: Obedience

Obedience shows how well a dog and handler work as a team. Two dogs go onto the field together. One works through its routine while the other lies in a down at the side of the field, with its handler standing some distance away, and stays there the whole time. Then they swap.

What you’ll see:

Free heeling: the dog works off leash at the handler’s left knee, through turns, changes of pace and a small group of people. Two gunshots are fired during the heeling to check that the dog stays calm and unbothered.

Sit, down and stand out of motion: the handler keeps walking, or running at the higher levels, while the dog stops instantly on one command. After the down and the stand, the dog is called back to the handler.

Retrieves: the dog fetches a wooden dumbbell on the flat, over a 1 m hurdle and over a 160 cm A-frame scaling wall.

Send out: the dog sprints straight away from the handler and drops into a down on command.

Down under distraction: the second dog’s job, holding a down while the other team works.

The judge wants precision, but not at any cost. Under the FCI rules, the dog should perform each exercise joyfully and confidently, and signs of fear or stress cost points. The best obedience routines look like a game the dog loves.

How obedience changes by level

IGP 1

IGP 2

IGP 3

Down with recall

From a walk

From a walk

From a run

Stand

Not included

From a walk

From a run, with recall

Hurdle (1 m)

Jump over and back

Retrieve over it

Retrieve over it

Scaling wall (160 cm)

One climb, no retrieve

One climb, no retrieve

Retrieve over it

Phase C: Protection

Protection is the phase people misunderstand most. It isn’t about an aggressive dog. It’s about a confident, stable dog that stays under its handler’s control, even under pressure.

The dog works with a trained helper who wears a heavily padded sleeve. The dog may only grip that sleeve: biting any other part of the helper means immediate disqualification. When the handler says “out”, the dog must let go. A dog that won’t release is disqualified.

The routine, in order:

Search for the helper: six blinds (tall tents) stand along the sides of the field, and the helper hides in one of them. On the handler’s direction, the dog runs around the blinds to find him: two blinds at IGP 1, four at IGP 2 and all six at IGP 3.

Hold and bark: the dog finds the helper and guards him, barking steadily for about 20 seconds, without biting.

Prevention of escape: the helper tries to run off, and the dog stops him by gripping the sleeve, then releases on command.

Defense against an attack: the helper turns on the dog and threatens it with a padded stick. The stick is only a threat: under the FCI rules, the dog is never touched or hit with it. The dog must hold a firm, calm grip, release on command and keep guarding.

Back transport (IGP 2 and 3): the dog and handler escort the helper down the field. At IGP 3, the helper turns and attacks during the transport.

Attack out of motion: often called the courage test. The helper charges at the dog from across the field, shouting and threatening, and the dog is sent to meet him head-on.

Second defense (IGP 2 and 3): one more attack while the dog is guarding. The routine ends with the dog escorting the helper to the judge.

What the judge looks for: a self-confident dog with a full, calm grip, a clean release on command and attentive guarding. Across the whole phase, the judge assesses the dog’s drive, its self-confidence and how well it copes with pressure.

Control, not aggression

Every dog’s temperament is checked before it competes. At the start of the trial, the judge carries out an impartiality check, and a dog that isn’t calm and neutral with people is disqualified. The judge can also dismiss a dog for poor temperament, including fear or aggression, at any point in the trial.

The dogs you’ll see this afternoon go from a full grip to a calm release on a single word, then trot back to their handler’s side. That switch from full drive to calm control is what IGP protection is really testing.

How the scoring works

Each phase is scored out of 100, for a total of 300. To earn an IGP title, a dog needs at least 70 points, a rating of “satisfactory”, in every phase. Tracking, obedience and protection all count, so a brilliant protection routine can’t make up for a failed track.

Just want to do obedience or protection?

As we explained yesterday, you don’t have to do all three phases. The FCI rules also offer obedience-only titles (UPr 1–3) and protection-only titles (SPr 1–3). Every route starts with the BH, the companion dog test, and you’ll see BH dogs on the field first thing this morning.

Today’s programme

Sunday 11 October · Dowerglen High School, Edenvale
Free admission and free parking.

08:10 BH obedience

09:00 IGP 1 obedience

10:00 IGP 2 obedience

10:30 IGP 3 obedience

12:30 Protection: IGP 1, then IGP 2 from 13:00 and IGP 3 from 13:45

Afternoon: spit braai rolls at R100 each, with all proceeds going to K9 Sport.
